Description

I will be posting new Equestria dreamscape soon. I won't leave poor Applebloom in limbo forever, but in the meantime have some more Rosemary.

This is from several years ago during what I now call my "Long torso era". This is also ended up being a textbook example of why I like to do tech study sketches of any equipment that is going to appear in one of my pieces.

I came up with the idea for this piece and went almost right away to final production. I had lots of photo reference of Uzi submachine guns and I had seen them hundreds of times. Besides at a quick glance it is visually a very simple shape. This would be a piece of cake. However when I started trying to draw the Uzi it just didn't look right, it was obviously an Uzi but it looked, well off. Then I took a really good look at my photo reference and what I was taking for being simple, straight lines were in fact subtle angles and curves to them. On top of not doing my homework I had failed one of the basic lessons that had been hammered into my head when I was in art school by my toughest instructor. "Don't look at it, observe it." So I stopped the piece and spent a couple hours doing some study sketches.

As I made my studies I suddenly realized that this is why so many Uzi I was seeing in comics and video games had this toy-like quality to them. The artist either had made the same mistake I had done, or they had run into a time/ technology restrictions when trying to build a 3D model for video games. Now understand this was over a decade ago so nowadays so most video games would be considered rather crude by modern standards but it was one of those little moments of enlightenment for me .
