Cruising to Canterlot by Baron-Engel Cruising to Canterlot by Baron-Engel
This image is neither canon to official Hasbro storyline or to my own Equestria dreamscape although it does have a reoccurring character from my dreams. The Mare goes by the name of Cogs and she is the daughter of one of the local millers. This image is part of a continuing series of ponies on motorcycles.

One of the consistent aspects of my Equestria dreams is the vibrancy of the land. The realm is rich and saturated with life; even the light from the sun and moon seems to bath the land in glorious illumination. Therefore any art I did of the Royal Sisters realm would use a different color palette from what I normally use. Instead of using browns and neutral tones for my landscapes i would substitute purples, violets and pinks. If a green or earth tone was needed I would use most vibrants ones I could tastefully employ to help maintain this feeling of richness.

Also I had to remember how my dreams interpret the fantastical landscapes of the show. The geography is still very dramatic in spots especially around Canterlot where the mountains feel like the Colorado Rockies, with deciduous trees slowly replaced with conifers. These forests and scrub climb up the sides of slopes until they to end leaving only rough faces of granite. For this picture I decided it was early autumn afternoon as the Celestia's sun slowly begins its descent to the horizon.

To those motorcycle fans out there on DA, yes I know a rigid frame V-Twin chopper is not the best choice for riding on a macadam road, but Cogs figured if some pegasi mare could do it [link] so could she! I am very happy how the candy apple orange paint job came out on the bike and the chaps definitely flatter Cogs flanks. In fact the chaps are about the only place in the entire picture that I used any true black. Every thing else was mixtures of brown, violet, reds and greens. The piece is done in my usual mixture of color pencil, marker, technical pen and a small amount of gouache.

Finally to answer the question that might be some of my watchers minds I did set this up so you can use it as a wallpaper if you want. Just don't go a crop my signature or the legalese on the bottom of the image please. Enjoy.

Wow. I have honestly never seen a take like this. I've always imagined Equestria as a place with a mix of modern and steampunky stuff, but I've never thought they might have motorcycles. Everything about this piece screams freedom, from the openness of the world around the rider to her choice in mode of transport and the open sky. If she was a pegasus though, I think it'd have made all the aspects that I love about this sort of redundant but I like that you went with an earth pony, because one would think she was about to take flight anyway. Are the handlebars on that bike modified for pony use? If so, I applaud your attention to the fact that ponies have hooves, not fingers or digits like gryphons or humanoids. Overall, this is just an absolutely beautiful piece. I wish I could've thought of more helpful things to say, like where you could improve, but I just couldn't think of anything. I hope you don't hold that against me.
What do you think?

I wish I never just saw that logically, she'd get that tail wrangled around in the tire... I can't unsee it, despite how absolutely beautiful it is...

Holy shit yes, I'm legit digging everything about this image, the chaps, the covered chain-drive system, just the extended forks.

It's not lore friendly, but then again, I'd say that most OC's aren't.  Regardless, the really pale and soft colors of the background are just. Perfect, and I'll leave it at that. Perfect.

Well in some areas of the picture, like the tires of the bike, her chaps, the bandana, and her mane and tail, block the areas in using water-based marker pens. I also used the technical pen to initially define the some the lines on the motorcycle.

Then I began applying the colored pencil to the working surface. Working the most distant objects, the sky in this case, and working forward. I blended the colored pencil using an odorless mineral spirit which dissolved the wax in the colored pencil.

Pencil is blended using a paper towel and cotton swabs. This lifts most of the wax off of the working surfaces while blending the pigment. I proceeded to apply successive layers of pencil and continue to blend them. Using less and less solvent. Once the sky was done worked on mountains and other background elements until the landscape was fairly finished. Once that was completed I started on the bike and then the pony.

The advantage of this method is that by removing most of the wax from the working surface I can go back in and use the technical pen again to redefine lines that might have become some what blurred. Also I can apply gouache paint to define bright highlights in the piece and certain details like grass stalks.

I do Picarto streams usually every other Saturday. Next one is January 21st Picarto and I often do colored pencil demonstrations on those streams. Or you can review my last stream which is still up on the Picarto archive where did a colored pencil demo.

Magnifique, but i think a Chopper with semi-slick tires is maybe the worst way of traveling on dust road ^^

Well a rigid-frame and stretched springer-style forks also are not optimal for work on dirt roads either. It is just a cool, but slightly silly piece I did; however you are correct those tires would not be I first choice either for real world use. Glad you liked the piece though!
