Trejo Modelo 01 machine pistol

Description

Mexico is not often thought of as a firearms producing nation but throughout its modern history it has manufactured arms for both its domestic and export market. The Trejo holds the distinction of not only being the world's smallest machine pistol, also being one of the few ever made to chamber the 22 long rifle.

Around 1952 the Armas Trejo, S.A. started in the city Zacatlan in the province of Puebla. Not far from Mexico City. Due to the region's reputation for being an excellent apple producing area the company adopted the apple silhouette as their trademark.

Three models of the Trejo machine pistol were manufactured. Modelo 01 and 02 were in 22LR, while the Modelo 03 was made in both 32 and 380ACP. The Modelo 01 was the smallest of all the models. At first the Trejo appears to be a miniature Colt 1911 but with a more sharply raked grip to it and no grip safety. In fact it is uses no locking breech at all and instead employs simple blow-back design. Rate of fire appears to have been between 1,000 and 1,200 rounds per minute. With only an eight round magazine at its disposal full-auto fire was restricted to one fast rippiing burst. A version was manufactured without the selective-fire capability for the export market but only a small number were made. Exact production numbers are sketchy to come by but up to 16,000 of the little Trejo's were made before a government order closed the factory 1971.

Modelo 03 was tested and rejected by the Mexican Army, but there are rumors of them being used for clandestine operation both in and out of Mexico in the 1960's for assassinations. The usefulness of making a machine pistol this small can be questioned since a shooter was effectively reduced to a one-shot burst when in full-auto mode. Admittedly it helped make up for the 22LR limited capability as a combat round. Still if one needed compact machine pistol for close range work the Trejo could've done the job.

I suppose if all you're trying to do is get close enough to unload a full clip into someone and worry about the rest of the plan later, it might work, especially when concealment's a factor.  Still, giving full-auto capability to a 8-round 22LR pistol seems to be ineffective at best.  There are better guns out there that combine power and concealment.
