One of my long time watchers on both FA and DA Aramis-Dagaz :iconaramis-dagaz: who has a tumblr called Ask Penwright [link] . Tomorrow is his birthday and I thought and while I could've given him another Llama I thought he'd like something that he didn't have to feed or clean up after. So I thought I'd do a quick sketch for him. It was a fast sketch. I don't think I spent more than fifteen minutes on the whole thing but it came out nice.

I'm still quite excited about this. I even wrote a new post on my tumblr blog about the significance of that pen: [link]

I'll bet you never thought that this sketch could spark such a long-winded discussion about unicorn culture and Equestrian history, now did you? =p

Again, thanks for the gift, it's a treat to see Penwright in your style.

I'm curious. Could there not be a situation where a unicorn could be conducting observations where their the presence of their magic could compromise, corrupt, or counteract certain types of magical experiments or reveal their location to potentially hostile forces or dangerous wildlife?

I generally think of magic as a force or energy similar to the four fundamental forces (electromagnetism, gravity, and strong and weak atomic force) unless the setting explicitly states otherwise. As such, a unicorn without the right training could act as a radio beacon of magical energy, disrupting any kind of experiment (if the unicorn is strong enough, it could even affect experiments of simple Newtonian physics). Likewise, I'm quite certain there are creatures or specially trained unicorn magicians who could detect the presence of magical energy, especially that resulting from a unicorn casting spells. For most unicorns, I think most would have to concentrate to detect magical energy, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that a monster that can "smell" magic exists somewhere in Equestria.

As a result, I'd imagine that all scientific experiments are conducted in magically neutral rooms and all unicorns need to either cast very low-level magic or refrain from casting magic altogether.

Perhaps I've found another stereotype for unicorns that frequently use spade grip pens...

I'd say there'd have to be. If it interacts with the world, it can have unwanted effects, too. We've already seen that Poison Joke is a wild plant that interacts with magic (I think I've figured out how it's "jokes" are selected, too), so it can't be surprising for other things being influenced, too.

Okay, I'm going to have to hear your theory on how poison joke works. You've piqued my curiosity.
