Luna bust color study 01 by Baron-Engel Luna bust color study 01 by Baron-Engel
She is the Princess of the Moon. She is the guardian of night. She is the defender of dreams. She is Celestia's little sister. She is Luna.

This was an experiment I did to test whether my color pencil technique will work on color paper. In this case black. The answer is yes, sort of, maybe, depends. Yes I can do it and get some interesting effects but it will not answer some of problems I was hoping to address. Still I can see a use for this combination in the future.

One thing I did discover is that you have to be more careful applying the UV resistant clear coat when you are done. If you are not careful it can create dark spots on the image. But that is why this is study. You learn things and go on.

WHAT? Oh my gosh! I should have put this wonderful piece a long time ago in my favs.

ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!! Here it goes!

The fact is was made with pencils make it even look better to my eyes.

Now.... if only I could give her a kiss on the cheek for making her smile.... or blush. She would look so adorable.

"Defender of dreams"? In your dreamscape, is this a mere historic title or an actual description of her abilities? I've heard some fanon where Luna has the ability to enter other pony's dreams and ward against terrible nightmares (I'm actually working such an angle into my own fanon), but what about in yours? If so, that certainly does introduce a new wrinkle into your interactions with the Royal Sisters. There's been plenty of discussion between your interaction with Celestia regarding you as an extradimensional dreamer, but I don't remember hearing much about Luna. If dreams are part of her portfolio, that probably give you two some special connection, or even gives her some special power over you. I can only imagine what would happen if she came to you and commanded you to awaken.

That said, I really like how this piece came out. The black paper provides a perfect backdrop and base color for her, as fitting for the nocturnal princess, both in terms of her station and personality. As cliched as it is for me to say so, I really like her mane. What impresses me is how you've captured that flowing, ethereal mane of stars, as though you're looking into a microcosm of the night sky, yet still made it look like it's actual hair, was well as capturing some of her pre-"Luna Eclipsed" style.

I also like her pensive, reserved look. While it may be hitting that popular "sad Luna in snow" chord, I think it's quite appropriate. Returning from an emotionally-charged banishment, struggling to adapt to a world far different from the one that she left, finding that her very presence is cause for fear and consternation, it would explain why she would end up being reserved and cautious.

Also of note is the shape of her face and neck. I'm not very knowledgeable on the finer points of equine anatomy, but the shape of her jaw and the muscle lines in her neck to me make her look strong. I haven't really seen this in your other pony drawings aside from Celestia and Firewing. This is most likely because this is a more detailed piece, but part of me can't help but wonder if this is part of her earth pony heritage. Now you have me curious what Princess Cadence looks like in your style.

Why yes, Luna is my favorite princess. Why do you ask?

In my dreamscape she can enter into a pony's dreams and help them confront their fears and problems. Remember she went dream walk through Petina and my dreams when we were at the palace in Canterlot. [link] She would like to do that for Applebloom but matters of state have kept her too busy to arrange it.

To stand in her presence and look upon her is to look upon the beautiful night and the heavens themselves.

Yeah she is slowly coming out of the darkness of isolation and banishment, but she has strength and with good friends, guidance, time and love she will overcome these challenges. Celestia knows it in her heart.

Also of note is the shape of her face and neck. I'm not very knowledgeable on the finer points of equine anatomy, but the shape of her jaw and the muscle lines in her neck to me make her look strong. Now you have me curious what Princess Cadence looks like in your style.

Well I like the theory that the two sisters are a combination of pegasi and unicorn, but instead they represent all three of pony tribes, so yes she has some earth pony in her.

penĚsive [pen-siv]
adjective
1. dreamily or wistfully thoughtful: a pensive mood.
2. expressing or revealing thoughtfulness, usually marked by some sadness: a pensive adagio.

If she's thinking of something unhappy, it would explain the slight frown. But yes, she looks thoughtful but not openly unhappy.
