Getting the boot!

Description

I must state up front in my own defense that I would've landed on the hay bales if Rainbow Dash had not punted me off the roof!

Returning to my Equestria dreamscape. After several weeks of reading books. Balancing a ball on my wing tips and classroom lectures [link] I got my first real flying lesson. Now I had done some of the pre-flight drills of jumping off objects like tables or stairs while flapping my wings to get an initial feel for what flight would feel like, but this was my first real flight lesson.

To avoid unnecessary gawkers and since they had plenty of open space on their property, Sweet Apples Acres was selected for flight training. Besides the Apple family had always wanted a deck on top of their place to enjoy the evening breezes in the summertime, so Celestia included the necessary materials for building it as part of the repair costs to their homestead which had been damaged during the fall of the Lord of Shadows [link] . The bits then came out of the Canterlot Treasury.

Now Celestia just provided the funds for the deck. She did not provide the ponies to build it, and since its original purpose was for my benefit I got roped into helping build it. Once I no longer needed for flying lessons then a railing would be installed all around the edge of the deck, but for now it was just a big flat space for me to take off from.

So one bright, warm, early autumn morning I found myself perched on top of Sweet Apple Acres with Rainbow Dash and Petina. Carousel had business elsewhere that morning. Petina said she was there for moral support, but since I had to help lug a lounge couch and umbrella up there just for her I think her real motive was to get some sun bathing in.

Now I knew that flying was a natural thing for pegasi ponies and I had studied the subject with every spare moment I could make over the last few weeks, but still to be standing at the edge of that platform was another thing. Therefore I blame my less than stellar first performance on stage nerves and Rainbow's overly enthusiastic assistance. Still by the end of the day I had not met Rainbow's exacting, overly optimistic standards. Therefore Dash gave me the charming nickname of Brick.

For this posting I decided to lay out the art in an actual comic book page format. Instead of random sketches that I do in my sketchbook when I have a moment or two.

Have you ever considered, when you had time, re-drawing important early works like this?

Your style has matured and changed a lot, and events like you getting your nickname 'Brick' and first learning to act as a pony will always draw viewers' eyes eventually.
