Finishing touches

The outfit designed by Rarity for Rainbow Dash to wear in the Best Young Fliers Competition link had been a success in my Equestrian Dreamscape. Only a few minor adjustments and modification had been required to make the whole ensemble work. Now there was just one little, teensy weensy matter to address, Dash’s personal grooming and hygiene.

Rarity, Petina, and Carousel all were in agreement that Dash’s personal grooming and cleanliness was the bare bones minimum required to be acceptable in most public places. However for the competition Dash was going to have to adopt a higher standard appearance. Failure to do so would diminish the overall impact of RD’s performance. Therefore Rarity had put together a plan to address the prismatic mare’s scruffiness.

Of course Rainbow failed to see the other mares arguments.

“I look fine. Heck I look awesome already!” Said blue pegasus mare. “Nopony had a problem with my appearance last year and I won the competition then! What’s the point?”

“That’s because last year Dash darling you were nothing more than blue streak for most ponies” Said Rarity.

“This year the whole point is to let ponies take a good, long, hard look at you, and trust me if you do your part they will be most certainly looking at you. Therefore we must eliminate anything the judges can use against you to marking off points in your favor.”

“I’m not that bad, am I?” Asked multi-colored weather pony.

Rarity sighed. “Not to put to fine of a point on it, but dung in a silk purse is still dung! You’re making such a commitment to every other aspect of this performance link that to let this one detail go unattended would be positively criminal! You simply must start taking better care of your mane and tail, and do you even own a currying brush?”

“Um, I think I still have that one my uncle gave me years ago, haven’t seen it in while though, and besides I’m busy, active pony I don’t have hours to spend with fussy hairstyles and stuff. It’ll just get all messed when I’m out flying and weather working!” Whined RD.

Rarity rolled eyes. “Yes, yes I am quite aware of your ballistic lifestyle but I assure you what I have in plan will not be an undue burden for you to maintain; nor will it interfere with your acrobatic performance.”

Dash sighed. “Fine, go ahead. Do your worst.” Then like a pony being led to her execution she followed the white unicorn mare into the bathroom. Carousel and Petina followed to give Dash moral support. Over the next hour one could hear the sounds conservations punctuated by moments of laughter and giggling.

I was working in kitchen cleaning the evening dishes, and making preparations for tomorrow’s meals when the door to the bathroom opened and the four mares came out. Petina quickly levitated full-length mirror out in the center room. Bring up the back of the pack was RD. Sighing she went and looked at herself in the mirror, and just stopped.

True to her word Rarity had done no extravagant braiding, curling, or styling to Rainbow Dash’s mane and tail. Instead she’d worked on eliminating all the tangles, knots that were always present. Now RD’s tail and mane flowed and shimmered like waterfalls of rainbows.

Dash’s hide was always a brilliant light cerulean blue, now it shimmered like satin. The effect did wonders to accentuate the mare’s taut, sleek, muscular body. Her feathers shimmered as brilliantly as any hummingbird that visited Fluttershy’s garden.

RD just stood in front of the mirror for a minute or so with a slightly dumbfounded look on her face. Then softly she spoke.

“I look awesome.” Rarity just smiled.
