Elegant Rarity by Baron-Engel Elegant Rarity by Baron-Engel
She is the element of Generosity. She is Ponyville's most famous fashion designer. She is a successful businesspony. She is a lady. She is Rarity.

This is a late Christmas present for a friend of mine but I figured others might mind seeing. Also I tried very hard with this piece to give a better feeling for my watchers of what the characters look like in Equestria dreamscapes. The piece is my usual colored pencil, marker, technical pen and gouache on cold-press Bristol Board.

FYI. In the original art her mane and tail are much more purple, but my very cheap scanner could not capture the colors correctly. When I get a better scan I'll post that art instead.

Yes Rarity does have a rather sly look on her face. It's pity that not all of the more subtle colors in picture survived the scanning to posting on the web.

This looks really nice.

BTW - is your scanner LED-based? I don't know that this is related in anyway, but I know my scanner has difficulty with both low contrast and pastel (pinks, purples) images. It's not a high-end scanner, but I didn't think it was cheap (though that would certainly explain things).

It is a mid-range Epson but it is an LED based design.

This is really superb, Baron. Rarity just looks so.... wow!

I think the detail in this is what I love the most. Especially for the inside of her hoof.

As Twilight has said, There are no words :O I am inclined towards unicorns anyway, so but if this is how ponies appear to you in your dreamscape, I don't think I could handle it hehe. Great piece, and I have been getting more and more of a crush so to speak with Rarity~ Here's to a Twilight pic in the future :D

It is as close as I have been able to get so far and yes I plan on doing a Twilight. Of course I also be doing color pieces of Petina DePony and Carousel to in the future.

Yes! Very excited to see those two in full color :D Petina would no doubt want to pose, pin up style hehe. Carousel is just all kinds of lovely herself too. ^_^

Well I have considered doing a color piece of both of them dancing. Especially with the stage costumes that they have both started wearing on occasion.

Ahh that would be beautiful, but I find myself devided between that and a full one on one detail picture of each mare. Either method will be lovely I'm sure~ Also, I only mention Twilight because she is just simply the most amazing creature I've ever had the pleasure of having been made to me, even tho I couldn't come close to matching her intellect, which strangely excites me.

Have you thought of a way to depict glitter in a drawing?

I have some ideas on how I might pull off the effect but I still need to see if they will work on paper.

Well, I was thinking more of how to show it in a scan/digital image. (My thought was to put multiple scans into an animated GIF.)

Hmmm, hadn't thought of that way since I am working in traditional media and if customer can not have it on paper then it would not be something they could buy. I can thinking of a couple ways for pure digital but I am trying to capture it in traditional media.

With the glitter gel pens available, adding actual glitter to a drawing is almost trivial. Trying to recreate the appearance of glitter without actually including it, though... *shudder* You have my respect, sir. (As if you didn't have it before.)

I've seen it done and what is more important is that it reproduces as looking like glitter. If you scan or photograph glitter it usually loses most of the glitter-effect in the reproduction. That is what I want to capture.

I can almost hear her -- "You will do what I want, won't you, my dear?"

How often does she give Petina competition in the "wrapped around her hoof" arena?

She can make some persuasive arguments at times and as a stallion they can be tough to refuse. Fortunately hanging around Petina for so long has given some defense against it.
