A friend beside you. by Baron-Engel A friend beside you. by Baron-Engel

Sorry for not posting for a while life got busy again.  After being accused by several of my coworkers of having an affair with Rainbow Dash link in my Equestria dreamscape, my weather work was very so-so for the remainder of the day. I desperately wanted to talk with her but weather business kept us separated for most of the day, and when we were together I was too busy doing cloud work.

Finally as the day shift was getting off work I was able to get a moment. She’d dismissed us for the day and was about to leave when I spoke up.

“Hey RD! You got a moment? There’s something I need to discuss with you about tomorrow’s low pressure system.”

“Yeah sure Brick, what’s up?”

Thunderlane, Stratus and Windfall had already left so at least I didn’t have them hanging around to make this anymore awkward, so it was relatively easy to get Dash alone. Once that was accomplished I told of the day’s events.

I had been a bit worried that RD would blown off concerns as being no problem, or she would ‘ve told me to be a stallion and deal with it myself. Much to my surprise she was surprisingly understanding of my plight.

She patiently listened to my tale and when I was finished she closed her eyes and nodded her head.

“Brick, come with me for a minute.”

Without further explanation she launched herself into the late afternoon sky and I followed. We flew in silence for about five minutes gaining altitude the entire time until we were about five thousand feet above the valley floor. Dash picked a small, random cumulus cloud and landed on it, for about a minute she was silent, and then she spoke.

“Brick, I want you to understand that I never meant for you to catch fire over what I’m a doing. What Thunderlane and his gang did today was pretty cowardly, and I’ll make certain they understand exactly how I feel about their actions today.”

“So what will you tell them if they ask you about what you’ve been doing out at our cottage?” I asked.

“I’ll tell them it is none their business. You were right about me coming out to your place just to hang out. You, Petina and Carousel are a blast to be around, and I am big pony and I’ll choose which ponies I hang out with and where I go.  If any them give me any lip I’ll buck them into next week!”

I nodded my head in agreement. “Yeah but I feel like you’re fighting my battles for me, do you want me there when you confront them?”

Dash smiled. “Nah, that won’t be necessary. In many ways this is my battle. First off, I’m the head weather pony in Ponyville and I will not standby and have one of my team members being harassed while on the clock! I consider it a direct challenge to my authority, if I don’t stomp this right now it could get out of control!”

“Second, as I said it’s my life I’ll choose who my friends are and where I go, and yeah Brick I consider you a friend. You’re hard working and for a pony that couldn’t even fly a year ago you’ve come a long ways. You got potential, you’ll never be as awesome as me but you got talent. ”

“Finally, I am suppose to be Element of Loyalty so I am not going to leave you out swinging in the breeze over this. If Thunderlane, Stratus and Windfall don’t have the courage to confront me over this I’ll call them on it! In public if need be.”

“Thanks Dash. I’m glad I’ve got you in my corner, and thanks for taking the time to talk to me.”

Dash smiled at me. “Hey no problem, besides consider it repaying a debt back to you.”

“What debt?” I asked.

“Remember last fall when Captain Firewing came out to Sweet Apple Acres and started acting like a hard ass on us? link Remember how I got into a funk over it and you got me flying level again? link Well consider us even now.”

Then prismatic mare stretched and yawned. “Now I’m going to get a bite to eat and then take a hot bath. After that I’ve got a Daring Do novel waiting for me! You’re off tomorrow but I’ll drop in the afternoon to say hi. You have a good evening alright!”

With that she launched herself into early evening sky. I watched her dive for the valley floor until she was tiny dot of blue. At that moment I consider myself very lucky to have her as a friend. Then I launched myself into the sky and headed for home.

To be continued.

Yeah the version of the RD in my dreams is definitely starting to show more signs of maturity than the show version has on occasion.

It is a blast to be able to plop one's self down on a cloud and just relax or eat your lunch. Even a plain old sandwich tastes better with a great view.

I am certain no matter what the outcome the stallions will remember it for quite some time.

Nice! I especially like the second image of the two of them simply sitting and chatting on a cloud. Ah, to be a Pegasus!

It is joy to just stop and take a break if there is an appropriate cloud around. Also it has the advantage that you don't have to burn much energy taking off again and you don't waste time and energy regaining altitude like an aircraft in our world.

Now THIS is the Rainbow Dash I met all the way back on November 11/12 2011 when the show premiered here! The one who is more defined by her great loyalty than her great ego. Awesome sketches and awesome dialogue!

Now I wonder if RD (or others, excluding Petina) will ever take advantage of Sky Brush's cloud shaping and basic artistic skills to have him create a cloud sculpture for some event. Surely RD knows what her weather team can do besides weather management.

Yeah will start happening some in the future. At the moment I have been so busy learning to be a weather pony that I've let my cloud sculpting skills lie fallow.

I can see it now (at least how Petina might hype it): "Sky Brush -- the Cloud Whisperer"!
(Hm, Cloud Whisperer might actually make a good name for an OP pegasus.)

That's a pretty mature way to handle it...  but no one said who she is dealing with is mature. This could lead to...  bad things.

Ay, I imagine those three aren't going to be any friendlier to Skybrush after Dash talks to them.  I doubt they'll continue to harass him at work but somehow I don't think he'll be getting any invites to parties or other little get togethers from them either.

As if he'd have the time. There are two mares he has to keep happy at the cottage, after all, and one of them is Petina, who would be a full-time job all on her own.

You know, I think your version of RD is a bit more mature than the show version.  That reaction and talk was like that of a seasoned commander who knows how important it is to maintain discipline.  It's good to see that she took this as seriously as she did and why she did.

It's still a kid's show. As much as I like it, we can't really ask for mature characters and complex plots (Hue) to the writers.

Yes the maturity of the plots that can be used in the show is hampered a bit by the age of it's intended audience.  This is where good fan fiction, of which Baron's work certainly applies, can at times explore subjects and themes the show's writers dare not tread.  Just imagine them trying to adapt Baron's "Lord of Shadows" story to the show or as a non canon stand alone movie.  The writers would have to change and edit things almost to the point of it being unrecognizable by the time they were done!

Yes, specially for the kind of show MLP is. There are other cartoons that are darker, even though most of times kids just don't get the full implications of what is going on. Heh. Dumb kids.

I think the best example of this is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. When I was a kid, I really didn't get anything of what was happening. XD

Dash is a bit more mature in headcanon. Still a maverick, and still prone to shooting her mouth off without taking the the time to think things through, but that is more mental laziness and being brash. Not being stupid.

It's the Rainbow Dash who told Spitfire to sod off in Rainbow Academy. We've seen RD has that kind of reach... sometimes. :)

It would be interesting to see, maybe in season 5, all that come to a head. Not sure that a kid's show is up to a "corruption in the military" storyline though :)

It would make for an interesting storyline but a tough one to sell, and I'm not certain they could handle it well. Even though could probably hire a bunch of the military bronies to act as consultants. Then it would be just a matter of listening to what the consultants told them.

Because of the "academy" episode or from other depictions? Because I don't consider either to be completely reliable.

The Wonderbolts Academy and the more recent Rainbow Falls episode have not done much to endear them to me. Spitfire's behavior in both episodes was very unbecoming of an officer in a elite military unit.

In the Academy, I might see it as being deliberately inappropriate to get past any false fronts the cadets were presenting. (They'd be ambitious by definition if they had to request becoming a cadet.) And for a prospective Wonderbolt, the testing might not stop with an Academy session.

No, what bothered was the fact that there were things going on at the academy that Spitfire and her subordinates were unaware of. My dad was a TI Assistant and he told me on several occasions that the instructors had to second the guess the recruits and be aware of they were doing even when they thought no one was watching or listening. If you couldn't do that then you had no business being a TI.

If they were actually unaware of what was happening, I'd agree. (I really need to re-watch that episode.)
